| G. Thomas Ward Photography - 7/00 to present | |||||
| Art Director/Designer/Production Artist Business website for a photographer who will be posting information and sample photography for eight very distinct segments of customers. Form follows function, Success here will be about stripping away and simplifying to create an elegant backdrop for the photography. At the same time, elements that must be visible like navigation need to make a real statement about creativity to distinguish us from a black box. They should be pleasing but not gawdy. Inspired by Eames, I gleaned a concept to design little "environments" for the photographs. Peaceful little white rooms distinguished from one another by specific shape and color iconography. The approach is minimalist, and very clean, with line art, subtle movement, and only a dash of color. The visit is enhanced by pleasant written advise, and by interactive photo galleries within each milieu. http://thepeoplephotographer.com |

| The Chicago Smelts - Masters Swimming - 2/01 to 2/03 | |||||
| Art Director/Designer/Production Artist I built and maintained these sites for my Masters swim team. I love a freebie like this because I can have a great deal of fun. The first site featured a random homepage generator, there were twenty. A sample homepage is linked below. It is equipped with cascading style sheets and seamless navigation. Smelts web has had a great impact on the team as an extensive information resource and meeting space. It has been a large boost to team spirit. The site at the second URL was for our swim-a-thon fundraiser which benefits HIV/AIDs and breast cancer charities. Its purpose was to create excitment, provide information and sign up participants, all of which it accomplished beautifully. The site, a bit over the top, is a jamboree of javascript and awash in amusing animated gifs. Click on the animation on the homepage to enter. http://chicagosmelts.org/index.htm (volunteer work) http://splashyourheartout.org (volunteer work) |

| VIDEO for the Web, Compression and Streaming | |||||
| Internet Start Up - 1/00 to 4/00 | |||||
| Art Director/Designer/Production Artist A very interesting project which involved streaming video for the web. Produced four versions to accommodate the various segments of viewers. Made a homepage and a "smart" selection interface which was designed to take the viewer to the appropriate version nuisance free. The four versions of the video were QuickTime for 56k, QuickTime for high bandwidth and Windows Media Player for 56k and high band width. Produced the QuickTime for high bandwidth version using "QuickTime in FLASH". A button interface was built and animated in FLASH, the video was imported, and then the whole thing was exported as a QuickTime movie with a FLASH track. For the other versions, the button interface was duplicated using framesets. MediaCleaner was used to prepare and compress the various versions of the video. The video had to be compressed to 1/100 of its original size to be feasible for the web. Unix and Macintosh servers were configured so that the video would stream in real time. Also experimented with HTTP streaming. The end result was totally cutting edge interfaces and really great looking video for the client to present. http://motionize.com |
